Before George Clooney met and fell in love with international law specialist and human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddi, he had sworn off marriage and children. Clooney’s fans have been left both starry-eyed and heartbroken by the couple’s fairy tale romance.

True love makes its way to you, as the adage goes, but it’s not as literal as it was for George and Amal. The two met at his Lake Como home. They hit it off right away and corresponded for a few weeks before the relationship blossomed. After a few months of preparation, George invited Amal to a home-cooked dinner, hiding the 7-carat engagement ring inside a lightbox that Amal used to light the candle-lit table. Since she was so surprised, he was on his knee for 20 minutes, waiting for her to say yes. The pair married in September 2014 after a brief engagement. Despite their busy schedules, the couple makes time for their children, traveling with them to some of the family’s favorite destinations around the world.
